Abstract
Abstract. According to recent prevalence studies, attention deficit is a common problem in elementary-school-aged children, both at school and during homework. Attention is of central importance for learning in school and regarded as a necessary precondition for academic achievement. Therefore, lack of concentration is a common reason for parents to bring their children to counseling centers. The Marburger Konzentrationstraining (MKT) is a well-established cognitive behavioral training program that promotes children’s attention skills and study behavior. While some previous evaluation studies reported on the effectiveness of the training, these studies were not conducted with a control group. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the training in a waitlist-control group design. Inattentive behavior occurs most often in situations demanding sustained mental effort such as schoolwork or homework. Therefore, the study evaluated assessment data both from parents and from teachers. In the current evaluation study, 25 children participated in a modified version of the MKT and were compared with 25 children in a waitlist-control group. In general, the children’s teachers recommended participation in the training. Preliminary parental ratings indicated that most children showed subclinical attention problems. The training was provided by a school psychology counseling center and consisted of 10 weekly training sessions with groups of seven to nine children and was accompanied by two information sessions for their parents. Parental and teacher report data on children’s attention skills and study behavior were assessed before (pre) and 3 weeks after the training (post). Multivariate analysis of variance shows a significant interaction between the two factors time of measurement (pre, post) and group (control, training group). More specifically, concentration problems reported by teachers declined significantly in the training condition as compared with the control condition. Furthermore, parental and teacher report data show that the children who took part in the training also significantly improved their study behavior at school and during homework in comparison with the control group. Each interaction had a medium effect size. Overall, the present data further support that the MKT is effective in reducing concentration difficulties. The study also provides the first evidence that the training affects study behavior not only at home but also at school. This is relevant because the results support a significant transfer from training into the school setting. The relevance of the study is, however, limited, among other things, by the small sample size and the nonrandomized character of the clinical trial. Further research is needed to validate, for example, which training components are effective, the differential indication for subgroups of children with attention deficits, or the additional effect of teacher training.
