Abstract
Abstract.Aim: This study reports sociodemographic data and alcohol consumption behavior of adolescents who had been treated in emergency care units for high-risk alcohol consumption. During their treatment, they were encouraged to participate in a brief psychosocial intervention. The effects of the intervention are presented in this paper as well. Method: A total of 175 adolescents participated in this explorative pre-post intervention study in Carinthia between 1 January 2010 and 30 June 2012. We analyzed sociodemographic characteristics, data on the current reason for hospitalization and on compliance as well as the expected learning objectives for both adolescents who gave consent (n = 44) and those who did not. Results: 131 of the 175 adolescents (75 %) refused to take part in the intervention, 12 of the 44 participants in the intervention showed significant psycho-social stress factors, and 21 clients successfully completed the intervention. Thereof, 15 have not consumed any alcohol since the incident, and 19 of them plan to be more responsible in dealing with alcohol in the future. However, no results are yet available for a control group. Conclusions: Consistent with previous research findings, most of the clients can be considered to be inexperienced “occasional drinkers” who underestimate the risk of alcohol consumption. The high rejection rate, also observed in other studies, indicates that the psychological strain for high-risk alcohol-consuming adolescents is poor.
