Abstract
Abstract.Introduction: Current literature describes cognitive profiles of children with comorbid learning disabilities (concurrent dyslexia and dyscalculia) as the sum of isolated learning disability profiles. But nonsignificant results of frequentist inference may not be interpreted as the absence of an interaction effect. Methods: In this study, Bayesian methods are used to test whether comorbidity actually leads to additive profiles of working memory, attention, rapid automatized naming (RAN) and mathematical abilities. 133 elementary school pupils were tested: 49 with dyscalculia, 20 with dyslexia, 20 with dyslexia and dyscalculia, 44 without any of these learning disabilities. Results: There is convincing evidence for an additive profile for all dependent variables – only the results regarding symbolic magnitude comparison are not clear. For the first time methodically convincing evidence for an additive profile in comorbid learning disorders has been found. Discussion: Children with comorbid learning disorders are neither disproportionately impaired, nor can compensation or a common cause of the disorders be assumed.
