Abstract
Abstract. Background: In historiography of sciences, scientometric methods are used to analyze big data (e. g., scientific publications) unobtrusively and objectively with reference to thematic developmental trends as well as to core areas of research and scientific publications. Objective: Comparisons of the publication output of clinical psychology and psychotherapy research between 1980 and 2014 in German-speaking and Anglo-American countries with reference to amount, developmental trends, and core areas of research and publications. What are the intra-disciplinary interdependencies of clinical psychological publications with the other subdisciplines of psychology? Method: Scientometric data refer to all publications documented in PsycINFO and PSYNDEX under the classification codes psychological & physical disorders and health & mental health treatment & prevention with the publication years 1980 – 2014. Identical searches quantify the frequencies of clinical psychological publications with regards to contents and with reference to comparable search fields. Results: Clinical psychological publications dominate the total publication output of psychology (> 40 percent) in the German-speaking and the Anglo-American countries. Similarities in developmental trends and core areas of research predominate differences. However, there are some striking differences. For example, publications on psychotherapy have a much larger share in German-speaking countries, while there are relatively more publications on health psychology and behavior medicine in Anglo-American countries. Intra-disciplinary interdependency of clinical psychological publications is characterized by a relatively high import from the other subdisciplines of psychology. Conclusions: Generally, there are more similarities than differences in the publication output of clinical psychology between 1980 and 2014 in German-speaking and Anglo-American countries. Some of the observed differences point at core areas of research and publication as well as correspondent gaps. Many references of the other subdisciplines of psychology to clinical psychology and psychotherapy research are noteworthy.
