Abstract
Abstract. Civil courage and helping behavior represent subtypes of prosocial behavior. Whereas civil courage is associated with high negative social consequences, helping behavior is associated with low negative social consequences. As yet, only scales are available that measure helping behavior. In order to measure civil courage, a scale was developed that refers to prosocial behavior with high negative social consequences. Thirteen civil courage situations are presented and the intention to intervene is measured. An explorative factor analysis (Study 1) revealed a three-factor solution that was confirmed by a confirmatory factor analysis (Study 2). Moreover, the civil courage scale was validated by actual and self-reported behavior: Whereas the civil courage scale better predicts prosocial behaviour with high negative social consequences (civil courage) than an established helping scale, the helping scale better predicts prosocial behaviour with low negative social consequences (helping behavior) than the civil courage scale. In sum, the new scale can be seen as an appropriate instrument for the measurement of civil courage.
