Abstract
Abstract. The necessity of a multi-dimensional analysis of motives and goals of sport participation in the field of leisure and health sports is met in an inadequate way by available inventories. The BMZI fills this gap. The inventory is specifically designed for people in middle and later adulthood and allows an individual diagnosis of motive profiles. The BMZI includes 24 items belonging to the seven dimensions: contact, competition/performance, distraction/catharsis, body/appearance, fitness/health, activation/enjoyment and aesthetics. The psychometric properties of the inventory were analyzed in an exploratory way in several studies with 1,098 participants and finally tested for the purpose of cross validation. A good model fit could be observed. The internal consistencies as well as the convergent and discriminant validity can be rated as good. The validation with the construct of self-concordance showed the expected correlations. The BMZI is a short, reliable and valid instrument that is suitable for screening multi-dimensional motive profiles and can be used to describe target groups in leisure and health sports.
