Abstract
Abstract. The present study investigated differences in the adaptive and maladaptive regulation of negative emotions (anger, fear, sadness) between adolescents from different age groups, and between girls and boys. We assessed emotion regulation strategies using the German questionnaire FEEL-KJ in a sample of 843 girls and boys, aged between 10 and 18 years. We found that 16- to 18-year-old adolescents reported significantly more maladaptive strategies for emotion regulation in comparison with younger age groups. Girls reported using more maladaptive strategies to regulate their emotions than boys did. No gender or age group effects were found for adaptive emotion regulation strategies for anger, fear, and sadness. Our findings indicate that late adolescence may be a particularly vulnerable phase for dysfunctional emotion regulation, and that girls should be supported in their emotion regulation.
