Abstract
Abstract. Background: The personality trait disgust sensitivity refers to the tendency of a person to perceive disgust experiences as aversive and uncontrollable. Objective: Development of a German scale for the assessment of disgust sensitivity (SADS). Methods: The SADS was developed (exploratory, confirmatory factor analysis) and validated with a total of 1,072 subjects. Results: The new scale consists of seven items with good internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.85). The SADS shows moderate correlations with the tendency to experience disgust (disgust propensity, r = .35), fear of injections (r = .20), and sociophobic tendencies (r = .28). The relationship between disgust sensitivity and phobic tendencies is independent of disgust propensity. Conclusion: The SADS is a brief, reliable scale for the assessment of disgust sensitivity. Its specific association with certain phobia subtypes (injections, social phobia) needs further study.
