Abstract
Aims: The increased risk of children and adolescents affected by parental alcoholism might partly stem from dysfunctional cognitions. The present study examines whether affected children adolescents differ from unaffected children and adolescents regarding cognitive patterns and analyses if these patterns are related to psychological disorders. Methods: The cross-sectional control group study covers a questionnaire study with 72 children and adolescents affected by parental alcoholism and 109 controls. Results: Dysfunctional cognitive patterns do not seem to be typical for affected children and adolescents. Nevertheless, cognitive patterns are related to psychological disorders in this group. However, this was found for the control group as well. Conclusions: Treatment of negative cognitive patterns can be recommended both for selective and universal prevention. Further research is necessary to identify specific cognitive patterns of children and adolescents affected by parental alcoholism.
