Abstract
The present laboratory experiment tested the effect of task-specific academic self-concept and goal orientation on achievement. Joy and worry in the failure situation were explored as possible mediating variables. Information on task-specific academic self-concept was collected prior to the experimental manipulation of the goal orientation of N = 74 university students. In both experimental conditions (learning goal orientation and performance goal orientation) participants were exposed to failure. Task performance as well as joy and worry during failure were assessed. Finally, performance in a subsequent task was measured. The performance during and after failure was dependent on the interaction of goal orientation and task-specific academic self-concept. Participants in the learning goal condition and participants with high task-specific academic self-concept in the performance goal condition performed better than those with low task-specific academic self concept in the performance goal condition. Further analyses revealed that self-reported joy in completing the task probably mediates the relationship between goal orientation/task-specific academic self-concept and performance during failure.
