Lernmotivation unter den Bedingungen multipler Handlungsoptionen
Abstract
Summary: Learning at school can be exhausting and takes time, which is no longer available for other activities. Models of learning motivation try to explain learning effort either by taking into account positive incentives of the activity itself and its consequences or by the match between person and task characteristics, while associated costs are mostly neglected. We assume that two types of costs have to be considered in learning: There are direct costs, which resemble the negative incentives of the activity, and indirect costs reflecting the missed benefits associated with the alternative action opportunity. In this paper, evidence from a survey study is reported (n = 184 students from all school tracks) indicating that mood and performance during learning is not only connected with the positive valences of the activity but also with the negative valences. Moreover, it is demonstrated that mood and performance during learning and leisure activities are also associated with the missed benefits of alternative action opportunities. The presence of attractive alternatives while learning seems to play a role for subjective performance.
