Abstract
According to theoretical concepts of Salancik and Pfeffer (1978) and of Hatfield, Cacioppo, and Rapson (1994), attitudinal and behavioral rules are thought to emerge within work teams as social contexts. These rules tolerate or accept certain kinds of health complaints more than others. This study examines whether and to what extent self-reported individual psychological and physical health complaints are influenced by the social context within work teams. The social context was operationalized via the aggregated group measure of the respective individual health complaints. The examination was performed on a sample involving 456 employees divided into 32 work teams in 16 departments of residential care for the elderly. A multilevel analysis based on hierarchical linear modelling (Raudenbush & Bryk, 2002) was used as statistical measurement procedure. The results are in accordance with expectations: after controlling for the influences of some biographical variables (age, gender, and occupational tenure), organizational commitment, as well as individual psychological and physical complaints from the year before, the aggregated team-based psychological complaints only had an influence on the individual psychological complaints, but not on the individual physical complaints. The aggregated team-based physical complaints on the other hand only explained variance in the individual physical complaints, but not in psychological complaints.
