Abstract
Abstract. Assessing students' achievement is an important task of teachers. Recent research has shown that the accuracy of teachers' achievement judgments is influenced by factors that are irrelevant to students' achievement. In this article, we first examined the relevance ascribed to social classroom behavior regarding school grades (N = 99 student teachers). Second, we investigated in an experiment (N = 88 student teachers) using a simulated classroom, whether students' disturbing behavior affects achievement judgments in terms of grades and percentage evaluations, and whether the class composition regarding disturbing behavior moderates these relationships. On average, participants would allow discipline and social behavior to account for 16 % of subject grades next to written and oral performances (53 %), and subject-specific class behavior (31 %). In the experiment, controlling for actual achievement, disturbing behavior negatively affected the given grades and percentage evaluations. The tendency towards stronger effects of disturbing behavior, the fewer disturbing students were in a classroom was not significant.
