Abstract
Abstract. Starting from two theoretical papers which address theories on motivation to learn (Hofer, 2004; Krapp, 2004) a classification scheme for theories in motivational psychology is proposed. Applying the classificatory dimensions of content vs. regulation theories, cognition vs. affect, and static vs. dynamic systems of motivation to actual theories on learning motivation reveals several deficiencies, but also opportunities for development. It is elaborated that theories on motivation to learn should focus more on regulatory processes. Thereby affective as well as automatic cognitive processes deserve more consideration. Finally, future theoretical approaches should regard the fact that motivated learning is always embedded into a context of changing and reciprocally influencing motivational tendencies as well as opportunities for action.
