Abstract
Abstract. Working memory is postulated as an important individual requirement for successful learning (Hasselhorn & Gold, 2013). The influences of working memory on mathematical learning are discussed accordingly. Based on the model of Baddeley (1986) the correlation of working memory with arithmetic competences was confirmed many times (Friso-van den Bos, van der Ven, Kroesbergen & van Luit, 2013). In addition, mathematical difficulties are often accompanied by working memory deficits (Schuchardt, 2008; Peng, Conying, Beilei & Sha, 2012). Considering these findings, the question arises how this feature can be taken more into account in the context of learning support. In order to provide answers, research on working memory training is presented. Implications for a support approach can be derived from Taatgen’s PRIMs Theory (2013). Following this approach, working memory functions are supported directly whilst mathematical capabilities are being acquired, thus putting an end to the debate on specific versus unspecific support (e.g. Hager & Hasselhorn, 1998; Klauer, 1996). The present study shows the development of this approach and gives an insight on the chances resulting for children with learning difficulties.
